JD's Home Renovation / by Karen Swanson

Allow me to introduce you to a young couple I am doing some design work for. This is JD Martz, his longtime girlfriend Caitriona Daly and their dog Taro.

In August of 2017, twenty-nine year old JD Martz suffered a life threatening spinal cord injury while living in Los Angeles. After fighting for his life, he left his successful career to head East, to his parent’s home in Beverly, MA, for the long road to recovery. He is paralyzed from the shoulders down.

Through the generosity of family, a 1200 square foot, one-story home has been purchased for JD and Caitriona in Danvers, MA. Jim O’Neil of O’Neil Fine Builders, a family friend of JD’s, and a builder whom I’ve worked with on many projects, is spearheading a fundraising campaign in hopes of defraying the cost for this young couple with limited resources. The home will require extensive renovations to make it accessible for JD’s electric wheelchair as well as accommodating to the team of family and aides on hand to manage JD’s daily needs. JD and Caitriona hope their new home will bring them one step closer to the independence they once knew and provide a sense of normalcy as they adjust to the reality of their new life.

Your generosity is urgently needed… In addition to donations of time and services, here are some of the materials needed: kitchen cabinets, kitchen countertops, appliances, kitchen sink, kitchen faucet, HVAC, sliding door (Jim can tell you the particular type that allows a wheelchair to transition over), flooring, bathroom tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting, shower door, interior doors, and the list goes on.

Please contact me at nedesignworks@gmail.com or Jim O’Neil at jimoneil@live.com if you are able to donate time, services or materials. Please visit JD’s website if you are able to make a financial donation to help defray the costs of the renovation project.

And finally, a bit about Taro. He was adopted from a shelter by JD and Caitriona while they were living in Los Angeles. Since JD’s accident he has become very protective and spends most of his time perched on JD’s lap… certainly gives new meaning to “man’s best friend”. <3
